Yes, that's another thing that frustrates me -- the damage of this incident isn't isolated at all. It's going to affect non-fans' perceptions of fans, fans' and publishers' perceptions of American manga, would-be artists' perceptions of art, even people's perceptions of the scope and enforceability of law (not to mention what people believe about what it's "okay" to do, copyright notwithstanding)... Sadly, I can't disagree with the point that it's very likely this incident has lowered quite a few opinions on American manga.

I do wish he'd spent more time working hard and actually learning. I'm not saying that one can't ever copy poses during one's study of art -- but that should never be part of the end goal, which is to create something new and meaningful from ideas that have been expressed and re-expressed for ages.

Wonderful post!

As an anime artist myself, it's frustrating beyond belief to see this sort of thing happen. If he would have just spent more time learning anatomy and character design then he probably would've had a much better result.

WALLHACKS!

Also, people like Nick Simmons are making it all that much harder for "American mangaka" to get published.

Yeah, I agree. From the standpoint that's concerned with potential lawsuits I can see why an admission of guilt wouldn't have flown, but trying to pass it off as this weird mix of admiration and inspiration just comes off as offensive and incredibly entitled.
